A Day Trip to Beautiful Kuranda

There are so many fantastic places to visit while holidaying in Cairns. A must do is to take a day trip up to Kuranda. Kuranda is a beautiful laid back village situated 25km north-west of Cairns. It is surrounded by tropical rainforest & is abundant with wildlife. Back in the late 1960’s it was known as the place to be if you were looking for an alternate, hippy kind of lifestyle. Today there are still influences of this lifestyle but Kuranda is also known for its variety of cafes, restaurants, shops, markets & art galleries. There are so many talented people living in Kuranda, it is worth taking the time to look at their work, whether it be pottery, paintings, photography or jewellery to name a few.

Some of the other main attractions in Kuranda include, Birdworld, The Butterfly Sanctuary (make sure you wear bright colours, the butterflies are attracted to it), Australia Venom Zoo, or watch an Aboriginal cultural performance.

Now the fun doesn’t start or end there!! The 3 best ways to get to Kuranda are by Skyrail, Scenic Railway or car.

The Skyrail

The Skyrail is a unique experience, you will ride in a gondola that runs on a 7.5km cableway up the mountain, starting at Smithfield which is about 15 minutes north of Cairns. It glides above World Heritage listed tropical rainforests & offers panoramic views of the Cairns region. There are 2 stops before you get to Kuranda, you can get out and explore the rainforest by walking around the boardwalks and also take in the breathtaking views of the Barron Gorge. When the journey ends at Kuranda you realise that the Skyrail was really well worth the experience. A must do!

Scenic Railway

Another option is to take the Scenic Railway. It was constructed between 1881 – 1892 and comprises of 15 handmade tunnels and 37 bridges. Even by today’s standards this is considered an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude. It is a spectacular journey that winds its way through the rainforest and enters the Barron Gorge, take in the breathtaking waterfalls and steep ravines. The train also has a voice over commentary that gives you detailed history of the railway.  Again this is a wonderful experience &very highly recommended.

Lastly if you decide to go by car it is approximately a 30 minute drive from Cairns.

So if you are visiting Cairns most definitely plan to spend one day up in Kuranda & enjoy what this wonderful village has to offer! ENJOY!!
